REPRESENTING MACULOPATHY PATIENTS ACROSS THE US

Elmiron®, also known as pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS), has been thought of as a safe treatment for interstitial cystitis (painful bladder syndrome) since the mid 90’s. However, recent research now shows a link between prolonged exposure to PPS and a unique form of maculopathy or progressive eye disease.

Patients who used Elmiron® for two years or more and have experienced macular eye damage may be entitled to compensation. If you or a loved one has suffered eye damage such as macular degeneration, pigmentary maculopathy, pattern dystrophy or vision loss after taking Elmiron®, our expert attorneys can help you get the justice you deserve.

HOW DOES ELMIRON® CAUSE EYE DAMAGE?

Elmiron®, also called PPS, has been discovered to be toxic to retinal tissue in the back of the human eye called the macula. In a recent study released in October 2019, about 25% of patients who used Elmiron® displayed signs of maculopathy, a general term for any disease or condition affecting the macula. These patients had suffered significant eye damage, with many of them having already suffered partial or total loss of vision. Through testing and examination it was determined that the pigmentary maculopathy often developed by patients was connected to prolonged use of the Elmiron® drug.

Symptoms experienced by patients who have suffered eye damage as a result of taking Elmiron® include:

  • Difficulty seeing or reading
  • Difficulty adapting to dim or changing lighting
  • Blurred vision (often in the center of the field of vision)
  • Dark spots in center of vision
  • Straight lines appearing curved or squiggly
  • Muted or less vivid colors

OFFICIAL REPORT ON ELMIRON® EYE DAMAGE

Elmiron®, manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, was first realized to be toxic in 2018, when Emory Eye Center published a preliminary report suggesting the link between patients taking the IC medication and those developing pigmentary maculopathy. The warning prompted a more in-depth study into the effects of Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium (PPS) by an expert team of ophthalmologists in Northern California, who released their troubling findings at the 2019 annual American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting. The study found that one-fourth of the Elmiron® users in the study had suffered maculopathy due to their chronic exposure to PPS. This conclusive study highlights the negative effects of PPS on retinal tissue and confirms Elmirson’s drug toxicity beyond a doubt.

COMPENSATION FOR ELMIRON® MACULOPATHY PATIENTS

  • You took Elmiron® for two years or more

HOW DO I PARTICIPATE IN THE ELMIRON® LITIGATION?

Contact us today so we can confirm that you qualify. Our team will provide a free, confidential consultation over the phone. If you qualify, we will provide you with a standard representation agreement and intake questionnaire. These documents will allow us to begin the process of representing you in the Elmiron® litigation to get you the compensation you deserve.

WHAT IF I USED ELMIRON® BUT HAVE DEVELOPED AN EYE CONDITION THAT IS NOT ON THE LIST?

Studies are still ongoing to determine the various types of eye damage that may be caused by pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS) or Elmiron®. Current research suggests that certain types of maculopathy are most directly correlated, but ongoing research is still discovering the extent of the damage that can be caused by Emiron’s toxicity to tissues in the eye. Please contact us for more information and a confidential case evaluation.

IS THERE A GENERIC VERSION OF ELMIRON® TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT?

No other form of Pentosan PS has been approved by the FDA besides the brand name Elmiron® medication. If you have taken a generic or prescription bladder medication that is not Elmiron®, your eye is likely not connected to the medicine and you will not qualify for a compensation claim.

WHAT IF IT WAS A LOVED ONE, NOT MYSELF, THAT WAS AFFECTED BY ELMIRON®?

Anyone diagnosed with macular eye disease or conditions after taking Elmiron® for more than 2 years may be eligible for compensation and should seek advice from legal experts. If a family member or loved one qualifies, please call us to discuss the options available to have them included in the litigation.
