Rodan + Fields, the largest seller of skincare products in America, has marketed and sold Lash Boost to hundreds of thousands of people, despite knowing that it could cause these potentially serious side effects, and chose not to fully inform its customers of the risks they faced. Many of those customers have suffered injuries as a result of using Lash Boost.

Rodan + Fields claims that its Lash Boost Serum will give you “lush, longer-looking lashes with R+F Lash Boost™, a nightly eyelash serum. You’ll see a difference in as little as four weeks, and the best results in eight weeks.” Unfortunately, Rodan + Fields doesn’t mention that its Lash Boost Serum contains a chemical that is widely known to cause a wide range of potentially serious side effects, including eye discoloration, and loss of eyelashes.

Rodan + Fields’ Lash Boost product contains a chemical that is in the class of chemicals called prostaglandin analogs. Prostaglandin analogs can have beneficial uses, and they can make eyelashes appear to lengthen, but the medical and scientific communities have long recognized that these compounds can also cause serious side-effects. Those side effects include:

  • an increase in brown pigment in the iris
  • gradual changes in eye color
  • the darkening of skin on the eyelids and around the eyes
  • a variable loss of orbital fat
  • excessive tearing
  • eye pain, burning or stinging
  • lid crusting
  • foreign-body sensation (something in the eye)
  • blurred vision
  • eye itching

A 2008 article in the scientific journal Survey of Ophthalmology, noted that the chemicals used in Rodan + Fields’ Lash Boost:

are associated with several ocular side effects. Some of these are common, with no apparent serious consequences other than cosmetic, whereas others are much less common but represent potentially sight-threatening side effects. The former group includes conjunctival hyperemia, elongation and darkening of eyelashes, induced iris darkening, and periocular skin pigmentation. The latter group of side effects, which are relatively rare and lack definitive causal relationship to prostaglandin analog therapy, includes iris cysts, cystoid macular edema, anterior uveitis, and reactivation of herpes simplex keratitis.

Sadly, many people using Lash Boost have experienced the exact opposite result from the one they hoped to achieve with this expensive product: they’ve not only suffered eye irritation, swelling, drooping eyelids, and itching, but many of them have also lost eyelashes altogether.

While Rodan + Fields is not the only company to offer an eyelash-lengthener containing a substance with serious, and potentially sight-threatening side effects, its competitors with similar products properly classify these products as drugs, subject to FDA regulation, and include adequate warnings. For example, a similar product also contains the same eyelash-lengthening prostaglandin analog, but it is FDA-approved, available only by prescription, and its marketing materials warn of the serious side-effects that it can cause. In Canada, products containing the chemicals contained in both products cannot be sold as cosmetics – they must be sold as drugs, and be subject to appropriate regulation.

Unlike the prescription product, Lash Boost is marketed as a cosmetic – not a drug – and is sold through Rodan + Fields’ direct-to-consumer marketing. Its packaging and marketing materials don’t inform Lash Boost users of all of the many well-known side effects caused by the prostaglandin analog that it contains. As a result, thousands of people using Lash Boost have suffered serious harmful side effects – side effects that Rodan + Fields knew this product could cause, and that it did not warn its customers about.
